Common Questions
Don't see your question here? Send us an email or book a call.
Our code offerings focus primarily on creating visual parity with our designs and do not include wiring up business logic or making API calls. This kind of work is best suited for a member of your own team.
We try our best to embed ourselves into the workflow of our clients, though in the majority of cases async communication occurs via Slack Connect, while tickets are filed in the shared Notion workspace we provide for you. That said, we’ve also had teams add us on Telegram, WhatsApp, and Zulip, as well as add us directly to their Linear workspaces. We also encourage founders to book time with us via Google Meet or Slack Huddle if there’s ever a situation where it is more beneficial to have a face-to-face.
For designs, your team will have access to Kojo’s project files in Figma, which can be transferred to your own organization at any time. For code, we’ll transfer GitHub repositories over to you and walk you through deployment instructions. Some longer-term clients prefer to add us directly to their GitHub organizations and we manage their website hosting for them.
We’ve worked with two-person teams to VC-backed startups. What is important is that you have a vision. If that sounds like you, we’d love to work together.
Kōjō (向上) is a Japanese term that means to improve, often used in the phrase 向上心 (the desire to improve oneself). As Kojo is built to help companies improve themselves, we found the name extremely fitting.
Every project is different, so it’s rather hard to say. We aim to provide deliverables every 24 – 48 hours, though if a request is taking longer than expected, we’ll always keep you informed. On average, we design and ship websites within a month (2 weeks for design, 2 weeks for development), however, this can vary depending on site complexity.
While the Design & Code plan provides unlimited design and development (that can be used to launch a new website), most teams don’t need code up-front considering that we collaborate and design the webpage first. In this case, teams can subscribe to the Design Only plan, then upgrade to Design & Code during the implementation phase. Charges are prorated, so if you’re in the middle of a billing cycle, you are only charged the difference.
While we are open to one-off projects, we are selective about the projects we take on. Most one-off projects can range anywhere from $6k to $15k, so it is often more cost-effective to subscribe to a monthly plan, then pause your subscription once the project has shipped. You can pause your Kojo subscription at any time, and apply your unused days to any future design work you may have, free of charge. If you have a one-off project you’d like to discuss, please book a call with us via the link in the top-right of the screen.
While we are capable of (and love to be) incredibly creative, we still prefer founders come in with a rough idea of what they want out of the engagement. For websites, having a rough outline of the content you’d like to showcase is extremely helpful. For products, knowing your user, market, and intended functionality is essential. It is also helpful to have an idea of the designs you love to help us build a shared visual language. Without this criteria, we’re just taking shots in the dark and wasting time.
We offer a free trial so we can gauge fit with each of our clients, during which point either party can walk away if they are not happy with their early deliverables (though this has never happened). As a result, we don’t offer refunds. We will, however, continue to revise your deliverables until you are 100% satisfied.
We handle all kinds of digital design, including (but not limited to) product design, brand design, website design, marketing assets, business cards, and conference materials. Our code offerings focus primarily on creating visual parity with our design work, offering full-build marketing websites in Astro and design systems using React and TailwindCSS. In addition to this, we are happy to provide visual assets such as stock imagery and AI generations, sound design (via Audiio), and copywriting.
All of our websites are built using Astro, an extremely flexible web framework that enables us to build highly efficient websites. Interactive components, as well as design systems, are built on Radix UI, React, and TailwindCSS. Upon request, we can also develop websites in NextJS or Framer.
Hiring is a ton of work. Not only do you have to sift through a ton of applicants, you need to carve out time to interview, background check, and offer a competitive package that can set you back $100k–$300k if you include benefits, vacations, and more. Plus, you’d probably need to hire more than just one role if you want both a talented designer and engineer. You’ll also be responsible for paying your employee no matter what – with Kojo, you can pause or resume your subscription at any time.
